Theme: Aliens and Test Subjects

Teaser:

An unknown location. Seven aliens look down upon an area below them.

“Isn’t that the species that rips their opponent’s arms out of their socket during the last experiment?”

“Yesss. They did poorly in that experiment, but let’s see how he does in the Cube. That will truly test their value.”

“They're not /bad/ but I found the ones who worshiped heights to be the most interesting. I can appreciate their tastes.”

(A muttered “of course you would” can be barely heard.)

“Well, /I/ liked the logical ones the best. Slow, but efficient.”

There’s an eye roll that follows. “Needs a better sense of humor, though.”

“I heard there’s a new batch coming in soon, several will be from that planet… what’s it called?”

“Oh yessss, Dirt, was it?"

There’s a confused, surprised sound. “They did /terribly/ the last time they were here! I thought we had given up on them!”

“Our scouts said it’s time to re-evaluate them. They’ve stopped sacrificing each other to ‘invisible beings’.” Complete with a sarcastic tone.

A heavy, somewhat angry scoff follows that statement. “I still think we should have annihilated them when they started feeding people to the lions.”

“We don't annihilated species. We aren't like /them/.” The voice is cross and sharp in rebuke.

“We need the most indicative examples of their species otherwise it's all a waste.”

The aliens look slightly ashamed of whatever ‘a waste’ might mean, but they clearly all understand what it does.

There is some sniffing, then, very excited, “Lunch is here!”

The other aliens quickly perk up from their moment of contemplation. “Oh, lunch!” and begin to shuffle out.

Artemis
Artemis is designed for anyone who has dreamed of what it would be like to sit on the bridge of a starship. It simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. One computer runs the simulation and the “main screen,” while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do, like Helm, Communications, Engineering, and Weapon Control. Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room (“bridge”), and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain - a person who sits in the middle, doesn’t have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do. Sign up for a flight time outside the Artemis Room! Both team and single slots are available.Already scheduled to fly? Be sure to arrive 10 minutes before your flight time!

American Anime: The Ultimate Oxymoron?
"Western Anime" has long been considered an oxymoron- anime is Japanese, so how can Western nations lay claim to it? But in the contemporary world, these lines blur more and more. This panel explores the mechanical and cultural definition of Japanese anime, and tackles three different lines of thinking: products inspired by anime aesthetics; culturally sensitive and respectful storytelling like 2016's "Kubo and the Two Strings," and the outright adaptation style found in series like Avatar, Teen Titans GO!, Neo Yokio, and the recent live-action Death Note.

Hall Cosplay Contest Judging
Hall Cosplay Contest judging is a closed event. Only the participants -- designers and models, parent/guardian of participating minors (under the age of 13), and others deemed acceptable by Zenkaikon Cosplay staff, may be present for judging.

There will be judging on Friday early evening and Saturday morning of the convention. There is an optional “Fashion Show” during the Masquerade on Saturday evening if you wish to show off your handiwork. Participating in the “Fashion Show” requires attending the Masquerade and being seated in the audience. Participants are expected to wear their competition piece for the “Fashion Show”.

Any participant who does not follow the rules of the competition, misses line up times, or does not follow the instructions of cosplay staff during the event, may be disqualified at the discretion of the Head of Cosplay.

We had a pre-registration for this competition which opened April 14th and closed April 28th, 2018.  We do have limited slots “at con.” All slots are first come, first serve.  We will strive to see as many people as possible. Unfortunately, we will cap the Hall Cosplay Contest, if needed.

Rules
1. Participants may not enter a costume in the Hall Cosplay Contest that they did not make. It is expected that participants are the primary creator of the costume and make at least 75% of it. Youth participants can be expected to have received help with their costumes, however, the youth participant must have had a hand in its construction. If the major part that makes it a costume is purchased (e.g. You are Edward Elric and you made the pants, shirt, and wig, but purchased your cloak, or have created a costume from a “kit”), it cannot be entered.
2. If the costume has ever won a “Best of” award or placed (ie. 1st, 2nd, 3rd), at any convention, it may not be entered in our competition.
3. PRINTED reference material is required. Even if a character is popular or well-known, reference material is needed in order to judge for accuracy. Lack of PRINTED reference will greatly affect scoring, as not every judge has knowledge of every detail of every character. Quality printouts of screen-captures and official images of characters, and art book images are acceptable. Please include images that show front, back, and sides to demonstrate details of your costume. Not every character will have such images available, but the more shown to the judges, the better they can analyze the costume. Progress pictures of construction work may also help, but remember that judging time is very limited and the judges do not have the time to look through pages upon pages of reference.
4. All costumes and props are subject to the Zenkaikon Convention Policies.
5. Participants may have models to display their costumes. However, the primary creator must be present to explain their creations, and only the creator will be eligible for any awards for those costumes. No more than five (5) models/costumes may be presented.
6. Groups are welcome to be judged together but no more than five (5) participants may be in any given group.
7. Staged falls, as well as smoke, pyrotechnics, glitter, or other special effects that will leave a mess behind are prohibited. This rule also applies to the “Fashion Show” and Masquerade, for the safety of all entrants.
8. Entries may be in the form of Anime/Manga, Video Game, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Original Design, Adaptation, Fan-Art costumes, and any other costumes related to one or more of these genres. Costumes are not limited to source.
9. Participants’ costumes must allow them freedom of movement. Cosplay staff will be unable to assist entrants with their costumes. For the “Fashion Show”, entrants must be able to navigate stairs and move across the stage unassisted.
10. The number and types of awards presented are at the discretion of Zenkaikon Cosplay Staff and the Head of Cosplay.
11. You must be ready for your scheduled judging appointment.  Lateness and lack of preparation will DISQUALIFY your entry. To be early is to be on time.
12. Zenkaikon Staff are not permitted to enter the competition.
13. Entrants will be judged according to Skill Level. The skill levels for judging are as follows:

Youth
This is the category for those under 13 years old. Participants in this category will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This includes groups that are majority youth. Though it is expected that youth entries will have assistance, it is assumed that the work entered is still mostly created by the youth entrant. If the work is wholly created by a parent/guardian, a relative, or an older sibling, the entry should be entered in the appropriate Skill Level under the actual creator.

Novice
Professional costumers may not enter in the Novice division. A contestant who has competed and won in any division other than Novice may not enter as a Novice. A contestant who has won 3 or more major awards in the Novice division must enter in a higher division. Intermediate (previously Journeyman), Professional costumers may not enter in the Intermediate division.  A contestant who has competed and won in the Craftsman division may not enter as a Journeyman.  A contestant who has won 3 or more major awards in the Journeyman division must enter in the Craftsman division.

Craftsman
Any contestant may enter the Craftsman division.

Note:
Professional costumer is defined as someone who makes over 50% of their income through costume making or commissions.
Major awards are defined as “Best in Show”, “Best of Division”, “Best of Day” or placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)  Minor awards are defined as those such as Honorable Mention, Judge’s Awards, and those not covered under Major awards. They do not affect skill level placement.

Sakura Cosplay Ball
**THIS EVENT FILLS FAST. IF YOU EXIT THE BALL, ANOTHER PERSON WILL BE LET IN. YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT IN LINE TO ENTER AGAIN.*
Back for 2018, the Sakura Ball is Friday evening's formal event for all ages! Prepare for a decadent evening of cosplay, music, and dance, with special guest Triforce Quartet! Prior to the Ball, dance instruction will be provided. Formal dress is not required for this instructional event. We look forward to seeing everyone dressed to the nines!

Dress Code
As with any formal event, there is a dress code and some expected decorum.  Since this event’s main feature is music and dance, attendees should be sure to wear attire that they can move comfortably in.  Although the dress code will allow admittance to the Sakura Ball, not all forms of dress are appropriate. Attendees should not wear costume pieces or shoes that can easily come off. No props are allowed. Actual costume is not required, but the dress code must be adhered to.

Allowed Womenswear:
*All dresses/skirts should be approximately knee length or longer

Appropriate Footwear:

In general, clothing should be modest, not skin tight, and not reveal a large amount of skin.  It should also not drag on the floor with a long train. Think of what a person or character might wear to a formal event like a wedding or prom. Crossplay is welcome as long as the attire is appropriate for the character being portrayed.  Accessories like top hats, canes, or hand fans are welcome.

Artemis is designed for anyone who has dreamed of what it would be like to sit on the bridge of a starship. It simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room (“bridge”), and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain - a person who sits in the middle, doesn’t have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do. Cosplay Dating Game
Ever wonder what it would be like if Cloud Strife dated Usagi Tsukino?  Or, if Eren Jaeger found true love with Ryuko Matoi?!  These matches might not happen, but you never know what wild matches will be made at Zenkaikon's Cosplay Dating Game! Who knows, maybe Deadpool will fall in love with The Borg Queen!

The Cosplay Dating Game is similar to the traditional 'Dating Game' of yesteryear TV. Three bachelors or bachelorettes sit on one side of a curtain. On the other side is the 'prize,' an elusive bachelor or bachelorette for one of the 3 contestants to 'win.' The twist is that participants are in costume and are the character. The prize will ask several questions, which contestants must answer in character. Then “the prize” will choose which date they want. Unlike the real 'Dating Game,' this event is purely for the amusement and entertainment of the participants and audience. No real dating is involved.

Cosplay Dating Game [18+]

Charity Auction
Zenkaikon has chosen to support The AbleGamers Foundation as our official charity for Zenkaikon 2018!
The AbleGamers Foundation, also known as AbleGamers Charity, is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit public charity that aims to improve the overall quality of life for those with disabilities through the power of video games.
Video games allow individuals with disabilities to experience situations that may be difficult or limited in the real world, provide social networking opportunities to maintain mental and emotional health, and participate in one of the world’s largest pastimes.
Some of the ways AbleGamers fulfills it mission include:
  • With a combination of technologies such as mouth controllers, eye gaze, and special customized controllers, AbleGamers finds a way for people to play video games no matter their ability. When AbleGamers accessibility experts give assessments to determine the right set of equipment for each individual, they're using the latest, bleeding edge technology to bridge the gap between ability and desire.
  • The AbleGamers Foundation promotes open dialog, education, research and funding grants in the area of gaming accessibility.
  • In 2012, The AbleGamers Foundation opened "The AbleGamers Center on Game Accessibility and Inclusive Play" in Harpers Ferry, WV. The center offers a place for people with disabilities to come and experience cutting-edge accessible technology. It also has a makers space for custom controller design, and prototyping.
  • Partnering with sponsors, AbleGamers is building accessible game rooms for activity centers that support people with disabilities, the first being at the Pediatric Specialty Care in Hopewell, PA.
On Sunday of the convention, Zenkaikon will be holding its fourth annual Charity Auction. 100% of funds raised at the auction will be donated to the AbleGamers Foundation.

Triforce Quartet Concert
The Triforce Quartet is a traditional string quartet that plays video game music.

The Triforce Quartet began innocently as a short Zelda medley for an encore of a recital in early 2007, but the video of using traditional string quartet instruments to play music of classic games gained viral popularity later that summer. Thanks to this, cellist Chad Schwartz was able to combine his love for video games, along with years of classical training, to arrange a variety of video game themes that even non-gamers can enjoy. The four members of the Triforce Quartet -- Christopher Ferrara, Jacob Roege, Stanley Beckwith, and Chad Schwartz --  take audience members on an unforgettable musical journey.

The Triforce Quartet has played in front of sold out shows at PAX Prime in Seattle, PAX East in Boston, MAGFest in Washington DC, the iDIG Music Festival in Ireland and with Video Games Live!

LARP Closing
Closing and wrap-up.

Ever loved an anime character so much you wanted to be that character? If you come over to the LARP, you have your chance! LARP, or Live Action Role Playing, is played much like most tabletop games. The game will run the course of the convention, featuring an overarching plot and scheduled events, so you can attend as much or as little as you like. We have over 2,000 anime and manga characters to choose from, so pick your favorite and play using a character sheet and rock-paper-scissors. No dice or cosplay required!
